When you are in a hi-rise building that is constructed from concrete you will not need a heavy product to correct footstep noise. Sound Isolation Company offer PRIVACY ULTIMATE UNDERLAY™ in 1/8" and 1/4" thickness for just these projects.
At 1/8 – PRIVACY ULTIMATE UNDERLAY™ is a green, durable option when compared to other super thin foam products. PRIVACY ULTIMATE UNDERLAY™ will not fail over time, does not absorb water, promote mold growth, and when glued down it acts as a vapor barrier. When floated you simple use a poly barrier (clear plastic) and roll our product on top.

Floated Floor on Lightweight Concrete
In this scenario you have a much heavier floor, and the ability to block airborne noise from up and down is greatly improved. When installing a wood floor over the lightweight concrete you can use 1/8" PRIVACY ULTIMATE UNDERLAY™ for reasonable footstep improvement, and 1/4" PRIVACY ULTIMATE UNDERLAY™ for the best outcome.
* Gypcrete is a brand name for lightweight concrete; in most cases they offer a sound isolation pad to be used under the product. This pad can cost more than $1.50/sqft, and if not installed perfectly it can really perform poorly. We prefer products like ours that absorb impact noise where it happens.

Floated Floors Wood Frame Construction
PRIVACY ULTIMATE UNDERLAY™ is available in many thicknesses, and the selection should be based on your expectations of "privacy". In residential projects the higher the weight of the product is directly proportional to the sound blocking of speech, tv, home theater, kids playing, etc.
If you have no insulation in the ceiling cavity, 1/2" drywall on the ceiling below, and a single layer of plywood for your sub floor, you should be able to hear almost everything from below and from above. In this scenario you cannot overdo it on thickness; minimum 3/8 – is required to make a measurable difference.

Floating or Glue Down Wood Floors
PRIVACY ULTIMATE UNDERLAY™ comes in easy to handle rolls that are 48" wide. For floated wood floors or laminate the product is simply rolled out, the seams are taped, and you install the floated wood floor directly over our product immediately. For glue down floors our product must also be glued down; a very simple process outlined in our installation guide.

If needed for residential projects we can shorten the rolls and weight. In most cases we ship this product by truck. Delivery to residential addresses is not a problem, we can include a power lift to set the pallets on the ground and you can move the material with a furniture dolly.

Privacy Tile/Stone Underlayment can be used over any sub-floor to create measurable footstep noise reduction. By creating a resilient layer directly below hard floor materials, the actual vibration from footsteps is captured at the source.
Privacy Tile/Stone Underlayment has been treated to prevent mold and mildew and will not absorb water, preventing rot and shrinkage. With a peel and stick adhesive already in place, the product installs up to 4 times faster than traditional concrete board, and provides a bonded crack prevention system.

PRIVACY ULTIMATE UNDERLAY™
To provide profound sound isolation for a nailed wood floor we have to take additional steps to insure a luxury rating. When a wood floor is installed to the sub floor with 100's of nails there are 100's of direct connections to the floor framing. These mechanical connections are the source of footstep vibration traveling to the room below.
PRIVACY ULTIMATE UNDERLAY™ should be used to isolate a new layer of plywood from the existing plywood sub floor. We will then have a sub floor we can nail to, but the nails will not reach the floor framing, and consequently the room below.

Proven to work in applications just like yours.
When selecting a product, consider the traffic level, the condition of the sub-floor and whether the product you choose is specifically designed for floors.
- If the area to be treated is a high-traffic location, a hallway or public facility, you must use a product that contains closed-cell foam under the Soundproofing Barrier layer; open-cell foam will not last under heavy use.
- You will need our help in determining if you have an STC or IIC problem, each one requires different consideration; they are not the same thing.
- You must be aware of the conditions below the sub-floor to ensure that the problem will be fixed with an underlayment product only. We can fix the ceiling below also. Please refer to our Soundproof Ceilings for further information.
- Finally, make sure that the product you select is specifically designed for floors. Soundproofing Barrier alone will not work, nor will more layers of plywood. Adding standard building materials is not a reliable method for isolating floors.
Privacy Premium Carpet Underlay
For your most demanding applications, we can combine foam layers as thick as 1/2" with a barrier layer of 1/4" to create a premium performance product. Adding 2 lbs sq/ft of weight insures maximum privacy. Our typical uses for this product are recording studios, commercial spaces, high-end residential and luxury yacht staterooms.
Privacy Ultimate Carpet Underlay
Manufactured entirely of recycled rubber, Privacy Ultimate Underlayment adds 2 lbs sq/ft of weight in only 1/2" and provides superior wear resistance for any carpet. An added carpet pad is sometimes needed for residential when a luxury carpet is to be installed.
Privacy Performance Carpet Underlay
For most applications our 1/4" premium foam, combined with a 1/8" Soundproofing Barrier layer will provide superb results. At 1 lbs sq/ft Performance Carpet Underlayment will add measurable privacy to your home. Instead of a carpet pad, Performance Underlayment is 3/8' thick, perfect for most carpet installations.
