club-gemini-night-club“We really turned up the volume to give the council an idea of the sound levels inside during operation. Then everyone went out into the parking lot.” From the newspaper article: When councilors and residents stepped out into the parking lot for the sound demonstration, many commented on the positive effects of the wall.

History:
The owners of this Bangor nightclub had been the target of noise complaints for months. They were re-issued a special permit to stay in business, but only under the condition that they take steps to significantly increase the soundproofing.

Three walls were concrete, and performed well. However, the fourth wall was a standard single stud wall with exterior siding, insulation and only two layers of drywall on the interior. This wall was the problem wall. To solve the problem, we recommended the following;

  • Remove the interior drywall.
  • Add an additional wood framed wall on the interior, not touching the existing framing.
  • Install two applications of R-13 fiberglass insulation.
  • Install 3 layers of 5/8″ drywall on the interior, with two applications of Green Glue between layers.
  • Outside, add two additional layers of T-111 exterior siding with two applications of Green Glue between the layers.

Several things are very important to note in this design;
Adding additional mass to both sides of this double stud wall was critical for low frequency sound blocking. Using different thickness for the layers is not a benefit when Green Glue is applied. The effect of damping created by Green Glue makes only one thing important- more weight, more weight, more weight!

The use of a single large airspace is always better than two airspaces, in any application. Unless the fire code requires it, there is never a benefit to using drywall on the interior of the framing; multiple leafs are never better than only two.

Green Glue is effective between layers of almost anything. Using T-111 siding for the exterior is perfect, you can expect great results with MDF, drywall, plywood, etc.

Comment from Management:
“The sound problem has been completely eliminated.” “We hosted the City Council to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new wall.” A report of the meeting appeared in the Bangor Daily News.

“There is a ‘wow’ factor as everyone comes out,” council member Gerry Palmer noted.

“The sound from the mercury vapor lights was louder than what was coming out of the building when standing 15 feet away.”
