Cort is a drummer, but for years he had been playing on electronic drums and missed the raw sound of an acoustic drum kit. He was reluctant to deal with the challenge acoustic drum noise brings, which would disrupt the peace and quiet in his home and disturb neighbors. Cort contacted SIC when he was about to start every drummer’s dream: Building a custom Drum Studio from the ground up.
Cort wasn’t renovating a spare room, converting a basement or trying to insulate his former studio, he had the freedom to build the drum room to suit his particular goals and needs, from the double-wall construction to a unique floated floor assembly and soundproof studio windows Having no experience with studio soundproofing Cort contacted Sound Isolation Company for help. Conversations with Jody Cook brought Cort’s knowledge of noise control to a new level. Although Cort didn’t pick up a hammer during construction, he was very involved with the planning of the project, and wanted to make certain that the architect prepared accurate plans for the studio. Working closely with Jody Cort knew exactly how the soundproofing materials worked and where they would be installed. Jody even provided the project architect construction details for the walls, floors and ceiling of the Drum Studio. Finally, Cort ordered all the soundproofing products he needed from Sound Isolation Company. Thanks to Jody, detailed construction plans, and a reliable general contractor, Cort felt completely involved during every step of the construction process.
Wall soundproofing was the priority for Cort because the Drum Studio addition on his 2-story home created a small attic space above and had very little exposure to other living areas other than through the walls. With full control to make his drum room as soundproofed as possible, Cort chose the “best soundproofing wall” option with a few additional improvements; Jody added double-stud construction with 5/8” drywall, Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound and Sound Isolation Clips on the interior. Using Green Glue dampening compound combined with Sound Isolation Clips the studio walls are both mechanically isolated and damped to provide the highest possible low frequency soundproofing. The double-studded wall was built with insulation in each row of studs and a 1” gap between wall plates. Jody recommended this wall system specifically for Cort’s new addition since live drums present a real challenge for true isolation of low frequency noise from one space to another.
The final step was a unique floor system that would prevent noise traveling through the floor to an open crawl space. Once the noise escaped the room it could easily enter the rest of the home through the floors, and even more important, travel to the neighbors. This vital step would not have been taken by the architect or Cort without prompting from Jody and Sound Isolation Company, saving $1000’s of dollars spent on a studio that wasn’t actually soundproof at all. Thanks to partnering with Sound Isolation Company, from the original design, to the actual construction and ultimately finishing the Drum Studio no issues arose during process, which Cort described as “painless.” Cort now jams on his acoustic drums anytime he wants to. Even with the drums miked on a PA system, there is no audible sound from anywhere in the house, allowing him to consistently play without disturbing family and friends.
